tamabonotchi: ([Rukia] Sode No Shirayuki)
My thoughts on the Shounen Jump Interview with Kubo recently.
Spoilers.
That interview SJ in English had with Kubo was OUT OF THIS WORLD with the Rukia and IchiRuki questions! We finally found out from Kubo the origin of Rukia's name. Since the beginning Rukia's name was always written in Katakana, and we didn't know what it meant or were Kubo got the name. Now, we do know.

SJ: What does Rukia's name mean, and why is it written in katakana?
Kubo: When I'm working, I jot down names in the margins of my notebook as they come to me.
Once on TV, I saw the original type of cosmos in South America.

SJ: You mean like the flower?
Kubo: Yes. The show mentioned the name of the flower in latin or something- like "rukia." It sounded like "Kuchiki Rukia" to me, and I wrote this down. When I created the character, I thought Kuchiki really fit as a Shinigami name and called her Kuchiki Rukia. She had her full name from the very beginning. Later on, I learned that the word "rukia" means "light." She's like a ray of light to Ichigo, which makes the name really suit her.

SJ: Do you have any plans to make Ichigo and Rukia a couple?
Kubo:
I'm not going to confirm nor deny that. [laughs]

I'll say some points:
1. Kubo had gotten Rukia's name from a flower. Nice and elegant, and yellow. And I remember in the 13th ending, there was a single yellow flower Yuzu was looking at, which looked like what the flower Rukia was named after looked like.

2. Kubo likes how coincdiently, Rukia's name could mean "light". I actually thought Kubo DID get Rukia's name from Lucia, or 'luc-' for light, because I thought it was something Kubo would do with names like Ishida's, Ulquiorra's, ect... Kubo likes to make references and make puns along with names. But for Rukia's name, he just had heard of a flower called Rukia, and decided it fit for her as a shinigami. But when he finds out how her name could mean light, he agrees it also suits her.
When I started thinking Rukia's name came from Lucia and it meant light, I began thinking. "Well, Ichigo had said Rukia had stopped the rain... What happens when the Rain stops?" Light comes out. If Rukia's name means light, That fact is being played even more with symbology, which is what Kubo does.

But Kubo sees how the meanings does suit her, and just HAS to add that last comment to gain our attention and make the innocent question about Rukia, to very shipping by mentioning Ichigo.
She's like a ray of light to Ichigo, which makes the name really suit her.

A "ray of light to Ichigo"? That just... gave off a shippy vibe, and was so poetic, it's the kind of writing I like and WHY I love Kubo's story-telling. Not only is she the light that had made the rain stop in Ichigo's heart, which is fact from the manga- but Kubo himself says she is Ichigo's light...
"The moon that eclipses the night."
So then it knd of degrades Inoue's symbol as the "white sun", her nickname from Aizen, and how some people actually think "Rukia stopped the rain, but Inoue is going to be the sunshine." ...Well one, that's clear speculation on the Inoue part. You DON'T know it will happen- the only fact is Rukia and she stopped the rain. What do we have now? Rukia is also Ichigo's light, having stopped the rain.

It was all of Kubo's doing- it is his fault the question about Rukia made us IchiRuki shippers so happy.
But that isn't all.

3. The other uestion- SJ ACTUALLY WAS BOLD ENOUGH TO ASK ONE OF THE ONLY SHIPPY QUESTIONS, and it was about IchiRuki officially becoming canon.
What does Kubo do? He doesn't confirm NOR deny it. He could've said something like "Oh, it's not a shoujo or romance." or "They're just friends." Like he probably would answer for such a shippy question, but he pretty much says "Oh, I'm not going finally say juuuuuust yet." But it just makes him suspicious. Instead of being straightforward with the answer like he was with other questions in the interview, he slides around the question.
Do you know how sly that is, and how funny he doesn't answer because he doesn't want to say yet- it was like Jaina's interview with Kubo where she asks why the Hougyoku was put into Rukia. Kubo didn't answer it, and said "It's a secret!" Well, that obviously means he has plans explaining that later. So it means he is going to confirm if IchiRuki does become canon.
Kubo is such a sly shipper he is.
